Bridgend County Squad Swimmers Make a Splash in Copenhagen!

Fourteen swimmers from Bridgend County Swim Squad recently travelled to Denmark to compete in the TrygFonden Copenhagen Swim — one of Europe’s biggest open water swimming events. The team included a mix of Masters swimmers and a few performance athletes, all keen to test themselves in a new and exciting environment.

Swimming Through the City

The event took place in the heart of Copenhagen, with swimmers racing through the city’s famous harbour canals. There were two race options: a 2 kilometre swim and a shorter 1 kilometre swim. Both courses offered a stunning route past historic buildings, under bridges, and through clean, calm waters — a rare treat for open water swimming.

The 2 km swim started near the Danish Architecture Centre and finished by the Black Diamond library, while the 1 km swim gave newer or less experienced swimmers a chance to enjoy the event at a more relaxed pace.

Open water swimming is very different from pool swimming — colder water, no lane ropes, and the need to sight and stay on course. But the Bridgend squad handled it brilliantly. Some were chasing fast times, others focused on completing the swim and enjoying the experience. Everyone finished with a smile.

A Trip to Remember

Outside of the water, the group had plenty of time to explore Copenhagen. They cycled through the city, visited local landmarks, and tried traditional Danish food — including the famous pastries! It was a great chance to bond as a team and enjoy a different culture.

The swimmers also got to meet people from all over the world, sharing stories and cheering each other on. It wasn’t just about racing — it was about being part of something bigger.

Now back in Wales, the squad is already thinking about future events. With Copenhagen under their belts, they’ve gained confidence, experience, and memories that will last a lifetime.
